Kőszeg

After long hours of traveling we finally arrived to our destination, the wonderful historical Kőszeg. Having taken our rooms, we had a simple yet tasty dinner in the town center. After dinner Gergő informed every one of the oncoming programs for the week. The day ended with sports and music. We’re looking forward to this week.

We woke up considerably early on our second day as we visited Tömörd, where we had the opportunity to catch and release some birds. The children were glad to take part in such an unusual experience and were really interested in this type of activity.  Following the exhausting and eventful morning we had some rest after lunch. In  the afternoon we walked around Kőszeg and visited the major sights. We also walked up to the Szulejmán lookout tower. At the end of the day the group enjoyed its well deserved ice cream at the main square.

After yesterday’s unpleasant weather we were waken up by the beautiful sunshine on our third day. We were delighted as today’s destination was the well-known Spa and Wellness Centre in Sárvár. We spent the whole day there sliding and swimming in the various fun and adventure pools. There was a baying pool, too, for the daring ones. Int he middle of the day we had a delicious lunch. We all were really exhausted by the end of the day. After having dinner in Kőszeg we couldn’t skip the usual ice cream. Half of the group was still energetic enough to play soccer in the evening. Tomorrow we are going on a trip to the 882 m high Írott-kő.

Today we headed out to climb the highest summit of Trans-Danubia, the Írott-kő. First, we stopped near Velem at the remains of an ancient settlement, now a place of a church of St. Vid. After taking a short lunchbreak we hiked towards our goal accompanied by Balázs and Péter the two biology teachers who were telling us about the area and the plant and animal life along the way. The hike was quite challenging towards the end but finally we reached the peak, which is the highest point of all Trans-Danubia. It is actually at the border of Austria and Hungary so we crossed the border freely a few times. Meanwhile, Kata, our volunteer, and Levente visited the castle of Kőszeg and not even three and a half hours in the museum could quench Levi’s thirst for knowledge. Tomorrow the language exams await the kids and another short trip.

In the morning, the language tests took place for the 14 English and 30 German students. Everyone was well prepared and gave his/her best. Then individual feedback was given to each child, advising them on how to improve. After lunch we went hiking to the rebuilt “old fortress” next to the town and saw the “hétvezér “ spring on our way back. It was a great day.

Today morning we were divided into two groups. Some of us assessed water quality and some others visited the Chernel Garden. We came across several healing birds as we walked along the path. In the afternoon we extracted DNA from a banana. After the interesting experiments we tested our knowledge at a quiz competition. Naturally we couldn’t skip the usual ice cream and football in the evening. Tomorrow we are going to say goodbye to Kőszeg and are going to get ready to our long journey.
