Nature Photography Workshop 1.0/2025

On May 23rd, early in the afternoon, the four of us set off from Nagybajom to take part once again in one of the preliminary workshops for the annual nature photography camp held in Baksa. This year, the event welcomed new participants—a student from Pécs and three sponsored students from Mohács. They joined us in Pécs, and from there, our group headed to Szeged in full. After arriving in the evening and having dinner, Anna Benczúr, a university student from the Szeged Group 2 who has been involved in nature photography for many years, gave a presentation to the aspiring young photographers. Her goal was to help them prepare more smoothly and successfully for the next day’s challenge, as performance at this workshop plays an important role in selecting participants for the camp.

After a short rest on Saturday morning, and following breakfast, we visited the buffalo reserve in Mórahalom. This was the first opportunity for everyone to get better acquainted with their cameras and with photography itself. The most skilled participants managed to photograph not only the buffaloes but also spoonbills and black-winged stilts.

Next, a vast poppy field nearby awaited the young photographers. Here, they could practice macro photography, with significant help from Szabolcs Turuczki, a graduate member of the Szeged Group 2. The following stop was a hike in the forest around one of the oxbow lakes of the Tisza River, where many more photos were taken. This setting also allowed the children to practice their macro skills on small insects and plants.

After a short lunch, the group split into three at our final destination, the Attka oxbow lake. Some continued doing macro photography in the forest, many got familiar with fishing, while others focused on bird photography from the piers.

After wrapping up, we said goodbye to our friends from Szeged, while the rest of us spent one more night in Baksa. On Sunday, we set off on the four-and-a-half-hour journey home, refreshed and reenergized. We had plenty of time to reflect on the recent experiences we had in the Great Hungarian Plain. See you again in Baksa!
