The Old Lady

Group 1 of Szeged visited the The Old Lady of Szeged today (27 January). Our volunteer, Julie and Ms Szilvi came with us.

The water tower on Szent István square was built in 1904 but local people just call her ’The Old Lady’. This was the first iron and concrete water tower in Hungary and it still functions. The building is nearly 55 metres tall. Due to its perfect technical solutions it was used as a sample in the upcoming years for water tower building. In 2005 at its centenarian, the building was renewed.

In the building there is a museum about the history of soda and permanent exhibition on physics with graphics, pictures and photos. One of the most interesting tools of physics is the Foucault pendulum, which demonstrates the rotation of the Earth.

We went up to the observation deck where we could see the wonderful winter Szeged.
