Our November Project Day in Szeged

“During the workshop of our Superhero project, the main focus this time was on the ‘making’ part. Participants could design an onomatopoeic word, or if they wished, their own name in Inkscape. First, we created a speech bubble, established text objects within it, converted them into paths along different lines, and then performed test laser cuts and engraving. We started gluing magnetic strips to the back of the cut-out shapes; we are planning further occasions for decoration and additional cutting in the near future. Then we will revive the knowledge acquired during 3D design and print symbols, everyone based on their own design.”

“The last weekend of November in the Szeged Community House was just as exciting as the others. The junior mentors presented to us what they do during the year as well as in the summer. It was interesting to hear in detail what junior mentorship entails, what tasks they have to perform that we don’t have insight into. I liked it when they spoke about their challenges and successes, and brought us personal examples and stories. It was extremely inspiring to hear how important supporting the younger groups is to them, and how they strive to find common ground with everyone. Their presentation revealed how much creativity and perseverance are needed to perform the junior mentor task. The fact of how much background work lies behind each session, which only they and the mentors see, was surprising to me. It was pleasant to sit and listen to them, as this was not a boring lecture, but an exciting, direct conversation, so we could ask them questions freely. I feel this afternoon was meaningful for all those present, as we not only learned a lot of new things but also became more motivated to try out the junior mentor role.”

“At the weekend Nature Explorer Club session, Ramóna Petrovszki, a member of Szeged Group 2, held an interactive session regarding the cell cycle; Rami presented the topic, which also appears in the advanced level graduation exam, within the framework of a session understandable even for the younger students. On the afternoon of the project day, we prepared and set up our first guppy breeding aquarium with the children; we got acquainted with the chemical background of aquaristics and set up the water chemistry suitable for keeping guppies.”
