Nobel weeks in Szeged

On Sunday, December 10, 2023, two Hungarian researchers received the Nobel Prize in Stockholm. To honor this distinguished event, the University of Szeged organized a week-long series of events, inviting our Foundation as both speakers and participants.

Our Szeged group’s university students and high schoolers participated in the closing event on Sunday, engaging in the high school competition and popular science activities.

“Today, the Nobel Prize ceremony was held in Stockholm. In honor of this, the University of Szeged organized science popularization activities for elementary school students and a competition for high school students.

Representing the Foundation, Piroska Szabóné André, a professional consultant, and our mentor Péter Mikics introduced the Foundation and our student research projects supported by Katalin Karikó. Szabolcs Turuczki and Anna Benczúr demonstrated photo layering techniques, and our mentor and Luca Berta introduced the underwater world through a microscope.

Meanwhile, we participated in a playful competition organized by the SZTE Junior Academy, alongside urban high school teams. The first part of the competition was a quiz involving questions about the Nobel Prize and general science knowledge, followed by a workshop by the Scup Association of university students, where we presented the research activities of Katalin Karikó and Ferenc Krausz in 2-minute presentations with the help of university student mentors. Throughout the competition, we followed the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm on local projectors. When the two Hungarian Nobel laureates were awarded, all activities at the event paused, and everyone watched and celebrated the central event together.

The event concluded with the announcement of the results, followed by a live report from Ilona Újszászi, the spokesperson for the University of Szeged, about the moments before the banquet in Stockholm.

We thank the University of Szeged, the SZTE Junior Academy, and the Scup Association of Szeged for this opportunity and experience!

Congratulations to Katalin Karikó and Ferenc Krausz for their outstanding award!”
