Makó = Onion, Maros, Attila József

On the morning of 29 August 2023, we visited the József Attila High School in Makó, where I will continue my studies from September. We entered the chapel next to the old college building and went to the bus stop designed by Imre Makovecz, whose concrete columns and wooden beams represent the Tree of Life. We then explored the centre of Makó. We visited the fabulous garden of the town hall, which has taken the shape of the onion that has become a symbol. Next stop was the Orthodox synagogue, which we viewed from the outside. It is Makó’s only remaining synagogue and the second largest in Europe. Afterwards we went to Petőfi Park, where we had lunch and then stopped to really take in the artistic wonder of the Bérpalota. The Art Nouveau building is a true jewel of Makó. What came next is beyond words, we visited the Makó Hagymatikum bathing area. The spa was impressive in its art and design, built in the Makovecz style of course, under domes reminiscent of giant mushroom houses, visitors can enjoy the medicinal waters discovered here in 1956. On our walk we visited the Attila József Museum in Makó, where we could follow the life of Attila József, especially the years in Makó. We also saw his manuscript, which was a great experience. In the courtyard of the museum there is a large skansen-like exhibition. There were 5 cottages where you could see a bodega, a blacksmith’s and a carpenter’s workshop, a living space with antiques from Apátfalvi and an exhibition on onion processing and mechanisation of production. To relax at the end of the day, we went to the Mako canopy walkway, where we could explore the flora and fauna at different altitudes of the floodplain. Among the foliage, they had also prepared challenges such as climbing over planks and various obstacle courses. It was a good adventure today, looking forward to the start of the school year.
