Maker’s Red Box – Global Warning Climate Expedition Around the Earth

On Saturday (October 19), the Global Warning climate expedition—a virtual journey around the Earth—began for members of Pécs Group 1. Last year, the members of Pécs Group 3 already participated in this fantastic journey, and this year, their younger peers get to experience the same excitement of this virtual adventure. With the help of junior mentors, they engaged in playful discussions on the topic of global warming, exploring its causes and interconnections, as well as each participant’s knowledge on the subject. They analyzed real and fake news. The children were enthusiastic and curious, and they were open to each other’s ideas. They selected characters that best suited them, which they will embody during the journey, and they began writing their ship logs, putting their ideas and thoughts on paper to ensure a successful mission. In the next stages of the “journey,” they will discover new locations, explore, measure, design and build ship cabins, reform transportation, and work with laser cutters and 3D printers, allowing their imagination to soar freely. A world has opened up for them that only a few can experience. They are eagerly looking forward to the next stops and adventures of the journey! Luca Borsy, mentor, Pécs Group 1

How we saw…

First session:
“Today, within the framework of Maker’s Red Box, we embarked on an imaginary journey with the children, with the main topic being global warming and climate change. During an interactive presentation, the children shared their opinions and knowledge on the subject, which we later expanded upon together. We discussed ways to combat global warming and, in the current situation, the methods that could benefit us to make the best of the situation. Everyone chose a role for the duration of the “journey,” and we also began writing ship logs, which turned out to be quite thought-provoking. Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious lunch together and ended the day with a group discussion. I believe everyone left with a good experience and gained a lot of new knowledge. It was wonderful spending time with the children today.”
Dzsenifer Csernyánszky, 1st-year MSc student in Geoinformatics at PTE TTK, Pécs Group 3

“The topics related to global warming were also very interesting. I was assigned the role of the entrepreneur in this project. We had to determine whether the news was real or fake. We wrote ship logs and arrived at our first stop, Chennai, India, where we discussed how they are fighting against global warming. I learned to look at this topic from a different perspective and am trying to live more environmentally consciously. The junior mentors presented the topic in a very engaging way, so I learned a lot, and we had a great time together. Today was really enjoyable!”
Lorenzó Raffel, Pécs Group 1

“Today, we dealt with a very interesting and exciting topic. We embarked on an imaginary journey related to global warming. We got to choose roles, and I chose a very colorful character—the artist. I believe artists add color to the world. There were several characters to choose from. We received ship logs and even got to look at an older ship log to learn how to keep one properly. We also saw the cabins that the older students built for the journey last year. The junior mentors told us about the places we would be visiting in our imagination and what those places are like. We began the imaginary exploration of an Indian city, Chennai.”
Réka Benke, Pécs Group 1
