We visited Szeged on our cultural day

“On a sunny but chilly morning on 18 November, the Szentes 2 group set off from Szentes to Szeged to visit the Móra Ferenc Museum, where we visited the temporary exhibitions entitled Treasures of Ancient China – The Age of the Jade Emperors and The Brain Soldiers. We had a look into the everyday life of the ancient Chinese people, saw objects, customs and belief systems related to their original eating and burial customs, as well as jade objects and weapon decoration made for the emperors of the time. A special feature was the jade funerary armour made for the emperors, which was assembled with gold thread and silk and consisted of 1,460 small jade sheets. The exhibition also featured a brick from the Great Wall of Antiquity and talks about the nomadic peoples who lived on the borders of China, such as the Huns. The clay warriors were an amazing sight, and the exhibition showed the complete excavation, the technique used to make the statues at the time and some of the reconstructed statues that were excavated. What makes them special is their precise clothing and their unique facial features: each statue is different. The Clay Army, preserving the tomb of the first Chinese emperor, Qin Si Huang-ti, consists of some 8,000 soldiers, as well as horses and chariots, built to life-size around 210 BC and buried with the emperor in an underground pit system. The generals, soldiers and archers were depicted in various clothing and postures. We then admired the permanent exhibits. We were able to admire Mihály Munkácsy’s huge painting entitled: The Conquest of Hungary and we also came across a work by József Koszta, who is from St. Petersburg, in the exhibition hall. In the natural history exhibition we learned about the fauna and flora of our country. In the second half of the day, we took a stroll around the Dóm Square, where we admired the church of the Assumption, and then we concluded this beautiful autumn day with a delicious lunch together.”
