On September 14, the Szentes 1 group embarked on a cultural excursion to Csongrád. We started the day at the community house and made our way to the nearby town, where we “took over” the local museum. We explored two exhibitions. The first focused on the hard ceramics invented and popularized in the 19th century and how these objects accompanied people’s lives during that time. In one room, there was a large board game available, where the boys and girls competed to see how much knowledge they retained from the tour. The girls won, but only by two points. Our guides for the day were Sanya Bá and Dorka Néni, both volunteers.
After a short break, we toured the permanent exhibition as well. Sanya Bá reminded us to pay attention to the information, as there would be a quiz in the evening. The exhibition was diverse and modern, filled with interactive tools, showcasing archaeological eras before the city’s birth, and covering various aspects of life all the way to the present day, highlighting important milestones. We also learned about several traditional crafts tied to the people of the Southern Great Plain.
We stayed at the museum until its 1 p.m. closing time, after which we had lunch and headed to our accommodation at the Körös-torok resort. A week ago, everyone thought we’d be swimming, but the weather turned cold and rainy, even preventing the evening bonfire we had planned. No one complained though, as the backup plan of ordering pizza allowed everyone to pick their favorite.
The evening brought more fun with community-building games. In one game, we stood in a circle, and only two people knew the rules at the beginning. Everyone had to figure it out as we played. Our mentor was the last to catch on, but no one minded, and the quiz based on the museum visit that followed—done through our phones—featured some really tough questions. The final scores were close, with just one point separating the third, second, and first places.
In the evening, we had deep conversations, discussing our new schools, upcoming language exams, and foundation language competitions. Later, we shifted to topics like global climate change, perhaps sparked by the poor weather. The adults shared different theories about the potential outcomes of these weather changes. As the night progressed, we relaxed in the lower part of our accommodation, playing foosball and ping-pong, while enjoying good music.
Despite the weather, it was well worth spending this excursion together, as we had time for each other and gained a wealth of knowledge.
