Champions League Match in Szeged

For the first time, I had the chance to watch a handball match live at the Pick Arena. And it wasn’t just any opponent – Szeged faced last year’s Champions League winner, Germany’s Magdeburg.

The atmosphere was incredible. It was amazing to see that handball, just like football, can draw such a crowd. Before the game, there was even a dance competition in the stands, broadcast with the help of cameras, keeping the audience entertained continuously. The player introductions were a special experience as well —-in semi-darkness, amid huge cheers, the players were called onto the court one by one.

Szeged started well and held their own for a while, but unfortunately, after the 15th minute, the home team was chasing the score. We witnessed some great saves (mostly by the German goalkeepers) and spectacular goals, including jumps with twists mid-air. During halftime and timeouts, the audience was entertained by cheerleaders performing small and large choreographies.

Although Szeged lost 34-30 to a team that was stronger on paper, it was inspiring to hear the young local Csányi students cheering constantly, even at such a young age. I am grateful for the opportunity, thanks to the Foundation, to support a European-level match live.

I also appreciate being able to experience new things with the Foundation, even after so many years.
